Wind Ensemble
Open to Grades 11–12 by Audition

Prerequisite: Audition with instructor
Wind Ensemble is the most advanced performing group at Waconia High School. Selection will be based on audition results, prior participation in Symphonic Band and Concert Band, and instrumentation requirements. All types of band music will be studied and performed in local concerts, contests, and yearly tours. Students will study various music elements (form, terminology, music history, and theory) through performance, music listening, and lecture. Participation in Solo/Ensemble contest is highly recommended.
Concert Band
Open to Grades 11–12 by Audition
This band will meet every other day all year long during the same period as Cantabile Choir.
1.5 Credits
Prerequisite: Audition with instructor
Selection to Concert Band will be based on audition results and instrumentation requirements. Concert Band is predominantly for instrumentalists in Grades 9 and 10. This performance class will place emphasis on the development of basic musicianship (tone quality, rhythmic execution and understanding, balance and blend, technique, and goal-oriented behavior and attitude). Music in a variety of styles will be taught and performed. Grading is based on individual practice, play tests, written tests, daily performance grades, lesson preparation, daily effort, and behavior. Expectations include a desire to learn and improve on an instrument, a positive attitude, self-discipline, and cooperation. Lessons and attendance at all public performances are required.
Symphonic Band
Open to Grade 10 by Audition
This band will meet every other day all year long during the same period as Concert Choir.

Symphonic Band is predominantly for instrumentalists in grades 9 and 10. This performance class will place emphasis on the development of basic musicianship (tone quality, rhythmic execution and understanding, balance and blend, technique and goal oriented behavior and attitude). Music in a variety of styles will be taught and performed. Grading is based on individual practice, play tests, written tests, daily performance grades, lesson preparation, daily effort and behavior. Expectations include a desire to learn and improve on an instrument, a positive attitude, self-discipline, and cooperation. Lessons and attendance at all public performances are required.
Freshmen Band
Open to Grade 9 by Audition
This band will meet every other day all year long during the same period as Varsity Choir.

Prerequisite: Audition with instructor
Freshmen Band will place emphasis on basic scales, rhythms, and tone quality. Tone quality and good rehearsals techniques will be stressed. Music in a variety of styles will be taught and performed. Grading is based on play tests, written tests, and rehearsal technique. Expectations include a desire to learn and improve on an instrument, a positive attitude, self-discipline, and cooperation. Lessons and attendance at all public performances are required.
Music Appreciation
Open to Grades 10–12

Prerequisite: None
Music is a part of everyday life. This course will introduce students to the different styles of music available (pop, jazz, classical, film, etc.) and how this music can be a tool for enjoyment and relaxation. Students will develop listening skills to help in distinguishing quality performances as well as knowledge about choosing quality recordings or attending the best concerts. This course is designed for students with no musical background.
Music Theory
Open to Grades 10–12
1 Trimester Period, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
This course is designed for the student who is interested in expanding his or her knowledge of the written aspects of music, including harmonic structure. The course includes the study of all the fundamentals of music theory and the development of listening skills. Physics of sound, sound production, recording industry, software, computer sequencing, computer transcription, composition, midi, recording, and sound techniques will also be discussed.
